about us

storm ideas ltd, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in April 2008 with the purpose of building web applications that allow communities, networks and businesses to connect and collaborate.

In this vein, we are passionate about the viral framework of social media and the opportunities networking sites represent to connect web-users from across a socio-geographic spectrum.

Equally, we are inspired by Microsoft Silverlight as an enabler for creating richer applications within the browser and, with this in mind, we look to create systems that provide new ways of understanding and interacting with information.

storm ideas was cofounded by Bob Thomson, who previously built and ran one of the UK’s largest Hair and Beauty e-commerce sites. Bob believes the time has never been better for small teams of motivated individuals to build truly innovative and user friendly software, which, with the distribution and viral nature of the web, has a chance of being adopted by a global audience.

Bob is joined by Jonathan Joyce, Technical Director and founding member of Storm ID Ltd, a leading Scottish Software company. Jonathan has spent the last eight years building an exceptionally capable development team and feels that a combination of the latest methodologies and early adoption of the cream of the Microsoft technology stack will continue to give both Storm ID and storm ideas a competitive advantage.

The storm ideas team is completed by Paul McGinness, Managing Director of Storm ID Ltd and, along with Jonathan, one of its founding members. His financial prudence, foresight and diligence over the past eight years have turned Storm ID from a small web development start-up into a successful, profitable and reputable enterprise. His financial acumen and management skills have provided storm ideas with an excellent foundation from which to realise its potential.

The first product from the storm ideas stable, colaab, was launched in November 2008 gaining positive reviews:

"Its pretty exterior and souped up interior are shiny enough that ponying up a minimum of $24/mo seems like a small price to pay." - Jennifer Van Grove, Mashable

"This app is far superior aesthetically. The UI is elegant and clean, with a rich interface thanks to Microsoft Silverlight 2." – Pamela Poole, WebWorkerDaily

In July 2009, Twibbon was added to our product portfolio. Within fifteen hours, Twibbon was one of the top ten trending terms on Twitter and in under three weeks, over 100,000 users had pledged their support using the avatar-customisation service. Twibbon received glowing praise from tech-sites, bloggers and the charities and causes it was conceived to promote:

"Thanks for providing a unique platform like Twibbon to remember the vulnerable and innocent and to raise a collective shout on their behalf. You are part of the solution!" - Rob Morris, Love 146 President
